a zoom talk by Lynda Harris
The Cathars were Gnostic Christians whose religion flourished briefly in Europe during the Middle Ages. Viewed as a threat by the traditional Church, they were persecuted as heretics from the 13th Century onwards. Only a few underground believers still existed in Western Europe by the 15th and 16th Centuries. Cathars lasted for about a century longer in Bosnia, where they were known as Bogomils. Here, after the Turks invaded in the 16th Century, they converted to Islam.
But some examples of their art and artefacts still remain. The most striking examples are their decorated tombstones, especially in Bosnia. And, surprisingly, many of the symbols on these tombs correspond with those in the art of the 15th/16th Century Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch. This talk will look at the symbols and discuss their meanings.
